THE CROWN JEWEL OF CHANDELIERS

Glassmaker Pedro Tendero was commissioned in 1962 to make the chandelier that gracefully crowns the auditorium in the Teatro Real. Of high historical value, the chandelier is made from rock crystal and bronze and weights 2,700 kilograms.

COLLAPSE IN AN EMPTY THEATRE

This precious chandelier made the headlines in 1995, when it collapsed 20 metres to the floor after velvet lining was placed in the telescopic conduit. The Royal Glass Factory of La Granja estimated the cost of repairs at 20 million pesetas.

SEVEN MONTHS OF RESTORATION WORK

The main chandelier crashed 20 metres to the floor prior to the inauguration of the new theatre. Afterwards a new replacement, also made by Pedro Tendero, was installed. However, it was smaller at 2,100 kilograms and of inferior quality.
